Wilhelm Reich, a student of Freud, developed vegetotherapy and the concept of character armor: emotional blockages manifest themselves as muscular tension that hinders the flow of energy. Through deep breathing, pressure on tensions, movements, and vocalizations, these “armor cracks” are opened, feelings are released, and vital energy flow is restored - for more vitality and emotional freedom.

Further development by Alexander Lowen Lowen built on this to develop bioenergetic analysis: standing exercises (“grounding”), intensive breathing, postures to mobilize bioenergy and dissolve character structures (e.g., schizoid, oral). The goal is “permitted liveliness” with grace and inner harmony.

Breathing therapy: Central to this is deep, free breathing which releases blockages, brings emotions to the surface, and connects the body with feelings.
